The heart of the SMS M4 is a massive 130mm forged spindle. Forging creates a continuous grain flow, making it significantly stronger than machined bars. This allows the gearbox to handle the high torque required for large-diameter drilling.

To counter the lateral and axial forces of 8″ to 18″ hammers, the main spindle is supported by a specialized four-bearing arrangement. This configuration distributes the load evenly, preventing spindle deflection and extending the life of the internal gears.
